What does checking references and pay / salary mean when renting?

My partner and i are trying to rent a place for the first time. We put our applications in yesterday and today someone from the realestate rang my work and was asking about my pay and how long i have been employed for. Is this a good sign? Does this mean that i have possibly got the place? Any ifor would be great. Thanks.

Yes it is a good sign, the calls are usually a PIA and put off unless they are clsoe to the last thing to do.

Yes, it means they liked you and are just verifying the info you gave on your application. If it all checks out you’ve got a place. They wouldn’t even bother checking references if they didn’t think everything looked good.

YES, it’s a good thing. They are thinking of offering the place to you if your application pans out. So they’re verifying employment and salary and stability. And checking carefully if you’ve never rented before.
If you haven’t heard from them in 3 days from date of application, CALL them.
